Cutting Boards Woodworking Summer Camp Ages 9–12 | Monday–Thursday | Half‑day sessions

Camp overview Introduce young makers to basic woodworking through a focused, hands‑on project: building a custom cutting board. Over four half‑day sessions, campers learn safe tool use, fundamental joinery, sanding and finishing techniques, and design choices like wood selection and board shape. Projects use hand tools and age‑appropriate power tools under close instructor supervision. Each camper takes home a finished, food‑safe cutting board at the end of the week.

What campers will learn

  • Workshop safety and personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Proper use of hand tools: chisels, rasps, planes, coping saws

  • Introduction to beginner power tools (depending on site): benchtop sander, drill, small planer

  • Measuring, marking, and cutting to layout

  • Gluing and clamping techniques for laminating boards

  • Edge shaping, routing basics (optional), and smoothing

  • Food‑safe finishing: oiling and maintenance tips

  • Design fundamentals: grain direction, contrasting woods, handle and juice groove options

Daily schedule (sample)

  • Day 1: Orientation, safety, measuring and designing boards, cutting initial blanks

  • Day 2: Gluing and clamping laminates, basic shaping and removing excess material

  • Day 3: Sanding progression, routing edges/handles (if available), fine shaping

  • Day 4: Final sanding, food‑safe finish application, cleanup, showcase and take‑home

Logistics

  • Ages: 9–12

  • Schedule: Monday–Thursday, half‑day sessions (morning or afternoon options)
